How FaceScore Calculates Your Attractiveness Score
By AI Clothes Swapper teamLast updated:
Quick answer: FaceScore finds 478 points on your face with Google MediaPipe, turns the face to look straight at the camera, and measures six things: symmetry (30% of the score), facial thirds, canthal tilt, eye spacing and facial width-to-height ratio (15% each), and closeness to the golden ratio (10%). The weighted result is mapped to a score between 3.0 and 9.2. The scan is free, runs in your browser, and the same photo always gets the same score.

Most face-rating sites show a number without saying how it was made. This page lists every input, weight and target we use, so you can judge the score yourself.
Step 1: Find the face
The free scan runs MediaPipe Face Landmarker in your browser. Your photo is not uploaded for the free scan. The model returns 478 landmarks plus the head's rotation.
We refuse a photo when:
- there is no face, or more than one face;
- the face is narrower than 15% of the shorter image side;
- the head is turned more than 15° left or right, or tilted more than 18° up or down.
Step 2: Straighten the head
A face turned a few degrees looks asymmetric in 2D even when it isn't. We use the head rotation from MediaPipe to rotate the 3D landmarks back to a straight-on view before measuring anything. Without this step, real selfies scored close to 0% symmetry in our early tests.
Step 3: Measure six things
| Measurement | How we measure it | Best value | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Symmetry | Mean distance between 23 mirrored point pairs, as a share of face width | 98% or higher | 30% |
| Facial thirds | Middle third (brow to nose base) ÷ lower third (nose base to chin) | 1.00 | 15% |
| Canthal tilt | Angle from inner to outer eye corner, averaged over both eyes | +5° (positive) | 15% |
| Eye spacing | Gap between inner eye corners ÷ eye width | 1.35 on the landmark mesh | 15% |
| Facial width-to-height ratio | Cheekbone width ÷ brow-to-upper-lip height | 1.7 | 15% |
| Golden ratio | Estimated face length ÷ cheekbone width, compared with 1.618 | Within 4% of 1.618 | 10% |
Each measurement becomes a 0–1 part score. It falls off smoothly as the value moves away from the best value, for example:
- Symmetry: 80% scores 0, 92% scores 0.6, 98% and up scores 1.
- Canthal tilt: −6° scores 0, −1° scores 0.4, +2° scores 0.75, +5° scores 1, +10° scores 0.85.
- Facial thirds: a ratio 0.35 away from 1.00 scores 0.
Why is eye spacing 1.35 and not 1.0? The mesh places eye corners slightly inside the visible corners, so the ratio on the mesh is larger than the classic "one eye apart" rule. We set these targets from 18 frontal portraits.
Step 4: Turn parts into a score
The six part scores are combined with the weights above into a number from 0 to 1, then mapped to the displayed score:
| Weighted total | Displayed score |
|---|---|
| 0.0 | 3.0 |
| 0.3 | 4.5 |
| 0.5 | 5.8 |
| 0.7 | 7.0 |
| 0.85 | 8.0 |
| 1.0 | 9.2 |
The curve never reaches 1 or 10. A measurement cannot prove that someone is the least or most attractive person alive, so we don't show those numbers.
What the score cannot tell you
- It is not a beauty verdict. It measures proportions only. Skin, hair, expression, style, voice and personality are not in it.
- Photos change the numbers. Wide-angle phone cameras held close make the nose and middle third look bigger. Use the back camera at arm's length or more, at eye level, with even light.
- The targets are ours. They come from commonly cited proportions and our 18-portrait calibration, not from a study of what people find attractive.
- Face shape and the golden ratio are estimates. The landmark mesh does not reach the hairline, so we estimate full face length from the brow-to-chin distance.
How to get a fair comparison
- Use the same camera, distance and light every time.
- Look straight ahead with a neutral face.
- Pull hair away from your forehead and jaw.
- Compare scores from the same setup only, for example before and after a haircut.
